When I was a recent widow — and I mean recent, as in a few weeks after my first husband's death — another widow whose husband had died many years previously came up to me and said, "They tell you it gets better. It never does." I still think that might just be the worst thing anyone has ever said to me. But she was dead (ha) wrong.
