That system tells us that in order to win, others must lose. And then it builds up a whole, interwoven, tottering edifice of mythology as to why the winners get to be us white people. Under those mostly unconscious, deeply held assumptions, it's very hard for us to believe that real justice and equality is even possible; there has to be somebody on the bottom, and we're sick with fear that it will be us.
