This makes me sad for young women today who are barraged by messages from social media that encourage them, purposefully or not, to compare themselves to unrealistic, or literally unreal, standards. I grew up decades before Snapchat and Instagram and YouTube — but just reading Seventeen Magazine was enough to warp my sense of how much my body was out of step with how I thought it should look. It took years to recover from that — and in fact I still have to talk myself out of trying to be thinner than I truly need to be. What a waste of energy.
