This is what all good fiction does, after all . . . show us how a character survives (or doesn't) awful things and stupid mistakes. so we can experience those terrible things vicariously and learn thereby. It's why storytelling is probably the first art form. Why we Medium writers don't remember that is a mystery to me, as I hereby smite my own forehead.
