This is desperately sad, but I suspect there are many, many elderly people like your neighbor. As others have commented, who knows what cards life dealt him to make him a recluse, but all of us need one another — and thank God he has you for neighbors. I know you didn't write this article to garner admiration, but you sure have mine. This is tough.
