Ms. Mode, you make many cogent points in your very well-written comments — and I agree in principle with nearly everything you say. I’ve never been a fan of elected officials attending prayer breakfasts and the like. But I do see a material difference between laying one’s hand on a Bible to take an oath — as a recognition of the solemnity of the act, and a demonstration of being in service to a greater power than oneself — and a leader waving it around like a weapon to demonstrate his personal supremacy. Yes, it was clumsy and he’s an ass, but we mustn’t ignore the danger.
