I've always interpreted the meaning of that phrase differently from how you mother appears to have intended it. To me, it refers to how we let ourselves take lousy, stupid, or destructive actions because we think we're good people and therefore doing good things, and we've failed to properly examined our motives. But maybe that's just me.
