I'm so sorry you experienced that anguish, David -- especially since there's no way to address it with your mother now. Yours and others' comments are really helpful — and I'm arriving at the conclusion that I'm happy with the relationship Mom and I had, and perhaps just holding her journals as a tangible memento is, for me, enough. Maybe someone farther down her line can read them after me.
