Hear, hear! I agree that the passive voice has its sly uses. George Orwell employs it to wonderful effect in “Animal Farm,” in which the animals’ collective responses are often expressed through phrases such as “it was felt that . . .” — lending that intriguing softening of direct accountability which works so well for an author who is depicting a steady rise of group-think.
